An eulogy.

Daddy & Mummy had high hopes and dreams.

But all they're left with is an empty nursery..

That day, I remember how happy he was when he told us,

'I'm a father now!' Eyes gleaming.

2 months later, all i saw was a white little coffin, eyes tearing.

7 January 2011 - 21 March 2011. In loving memory, Von Teo Wen Yin.

(Please read on, only if you've the time)

She was a baby born with 2 teeth.

The incidence has been reported to be approximately 1:3000 births.

And born with a blood clot in her brain. Signs of epilepsy.

Not long after, the clot dissolved. Then another problem arose.

Doctor found many cis in her kidneys and it functioned at only 20%..

She would probably go for a kidney transplant or undergo daily dialysis for the rest of her life.

Transplant or dialysis for a baby? Can't imagine.

In and out the High Dependency Unit and Intensive Care Unit she went,

life hanging on a thread.

Even in isolation room, she caught a flu which further aggravated her situation.

Her immunity system has disintegrated.

Her small arms were punctured with holes with the tubes to keep her alive.

So many holes to the extent that the doctors had no space such that

they had to jab the needles near to her armpits.

The medication had to be directly injected to her bone marrow.

The pain she had to endure is beyond our imagination for a newborn like her.

As an adult, how would you feel if bundles of tubes were being jabbed into your body now and then?

Much less a baby that's barely 2 months old.

Babies cannot express themselves except for crying.

She was in great pain and yet she couldn't cry because of the breathing tube in her lungs.

Once, she cried and cried until she was voiceless. Can you imagine that?

After fighting bravely for 2 months and 2 weeks, she succumbed.

It was apparent that her little heart couldn't take it and she probably died within seconds.

She was called home by God on 21 March 2011.

Heaven has one more little angel up there, because of her.

How much are we fighting for our dreams? What's yours?

* * *

Goodbye Von, you've been a strong little girl who taught me one of the greatest life lessons.

Whenever her parents come near her, she'll stop crying.

Whenever her parents talk to her, she'll quietly listen.

The day before she passed away, Daddy told her:

“Von von, 你要快点好起来。医药费很贵。”

And the next day.. She was gone. Because she didn't want to burden her parents?

Some people believe that this was her filial piety towards them. It's up to you to believe :)

I'm thankful for the fact that I did not have to undergo such physical suffering as a baby.

I'm thankful for the fact that I was born a fat and healthy baby, with a head so big.

(And now I'm still healthy, alive and kicking.)

I'm thankful for the fact that my mother underwent all agony and gave birth to me.

What's your FIRST thought in the morning everyday?

Previously, I would always wake up with thoughts of detest, why do i have to wake up so early?!

Now i'll wake up thinking, i'm really lucky to be able to wake up.

Just a switch in my thought and i'm ready to start a new day with at least a little zest and not detest.

Despite all the fatigue and what may seem like a drudgery i may face at the end of the day,

A thought sounds, "At least I'm still alive."

Then I'm back on track again, because between positive and negative thoughts,

I chose the former and I feel so much better. Do we have a choice over our thoughts?

I guess we do afterall. But the process of change can be painful. It's simply defies the usual you.

And I want to be consistent. It's time for me to reflect again and it's time for me to treasure

even the day-to-day things I take for granted.

你让我确定能活着是幸福的。

We love you and we thank you even if you're up above, Baby Von Teo Wen Yin.

Especially your Daddy & Mummy.

This is the song Von's daddy and mummy sang to her on their way to the cremation. Do listen.

If you may..
Would like to share with you a little personal achievement that I'm rather proud of..! Haha.
Finally after a year or so, I memorized the entire 弟子规.
(You must be wondering, wah this YC is so slow! I must be more efficient next time le.)
This entire book consists of the many words of wisdom by Confucius.
It encompasses the most fundamental and the most practical knowledge
which I can apply to my daily life. Contrary to popular belief, it's not a book for only children.
You may be surprised that even adults like you and me has much room for improvement?

I must admit this is one of the main contributing factors that somewhat impacted and changed my life, in terms of thoughts, speech and action perhaps? I guess I trust the truth more than i trust myself ba :)

To me, he has left behind an infinite inheritance of some of the most valuable cultural assets waiting for humanity to uncover.

I have to say that there are also numerous people, saints and sages or even Higher Beings out there whom we can look up to. And definitely not just Confucius. As for me, I choose to learn from him :)

Nevertheless, I'm always open to other ideologies or what may be deemed as the universal truth, because I love to learn..!

I thank you Confucius. And thank YOU for your patience, for reading till here wor!

♥ Because time will tell.

Veganfranks!

Cracked Pepper Mayo~

The other time with Zhiwei Jingyi & Angie~ ;D

With YY =)

*model pose* :P
We went for our photoshoot for the Public Servant Card!

We munched @ VeganBurg! I can't believed we ate and chatted for a good 2 hours?
Time seems to whizz by swiftly when you enjoy something greatly. Hehe.

Come to think of it, it's been a long long time since we did that.. :)
Let's bring Ohana there some day!

As we mature, perhaps we begin to delve deeper into our own and other people's hearts.
And as naturally as it seems, it takes time. Be it a month, a year or even years..
I guess we can only do it with bona fide love and concern.

Because we're still learning.. :)
Thanks for today!

p.s. Ohmy, why do my words resemble a burger!

It's a sunny yellow banana day.

BLOOB BLOOB~ What a FISHY weekend we had!
And it's all thanks to Maxie for the tickets please,
without it we wouldn't have enjoyed so greatly.

After being released from the respective Girls' or Boys' Home..

We jump for joy! Wahaha.

Ohana is like a bunch of bananas.
Always seen together, full of sunshine and laughter.
Sometimes we even behave like monkeys! Don't you think?
Cheerios, for the good time today ;D

The love of learning.

Firstly, I'm really sorry for the meagre updates.
Been really busy recently with school work & workshops.
Thanks buddies for showing concern by asking for my blog addy :)
Blog's alive again with a new stroke of simplicity hehe..

This week has been an eventful and enriching week for me.

On Monday, I gave the first ever talk to the Primary One parents in my life -
Cultivating the Love of Reading in Your Child.
When Amy Jie asked me to be the co-speaker together with her,
I was a little reluctant but then, on the other hand,
I wanted to expose myself to new experiences in order to learn so i took it up anyway!
I really believe that only by leaving my comfort zone can I really learn and benefit.
Whew. After much preparation, I managed to deliver the speech smoothly!
(Psst.. I stumbled a little at the end hahaha diulian~)
But it's an achievement for me, even if it may not seem big.. :)

This video actually made some parents tear..
Watch if you have time :)

I had a realization in the next 2 days..
That I fluctuate between the old and new me.
In the past, I was the one who'd often take the back seat,
a rather held-back person who doesn't dare to speak up.
There I saw her on Wednesday.. :(

During the workshop, we had group work and each group
was to send a representative to present in front of all the teachers.
My group.. I would say was less proactive
and we waited and waited until it was the last group.
Guess what? No one wanted to present!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..
I don't know why I was really afraid then but left without a choice
I hardened my scalp (硬着头皮) and went up,
ill-prepared accompanied with a lack of confidence..
Then I stood speaking nervously,
probably even spoke with grammatical errors in my sentence..
Instantly felt like a fool man :(

On Thursday and Friday, we had another workshop.
Told myself that I wouldn't be like yesterday, no way!
I have to learn to speak more confidently in front of an audience.
Brushed myself up and I managed to present more clearly than on Wednesday.
My colleagues even praised me for that, and that I can improve each time i try!
Confidence lost and found.. :) Thanks thanks thanks.

"The brave man is not he does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."
-Nelson Mandela, South African political leader

p.s.
What a wacky weekend I had. Of birthday celebrations, of dance, of laughter.. Of friends :)

2011 Chinese New Year Celebration.

And it was a success.
I feel a boulder off my shoulder.
那苦尽甘来的感觉..真好。

My gratitude goes to:
  • Angie for taking care of the children during the shoot at Chinatown
  • Felicia for your moral support at the shoot
  • Guolian for loaning your house for the shooting of Shou Sui
  • Jingyi for your encouragement during my stressful periods
  • Maxie for buying goodies for the children, you made them so happy
  • Mummy for your professional guidance and advice on the event
  • Yuyuan for playing the role of Daddy Doraemon
  • Zhiwei there's too much to thank you for that i don't know where to begin..

People. Really thank you for being there when I needed you.
:)

My first time being assigned as

the overall in-charge of such a large scale event..
I recall being only the audience for the past 20 years,
sitting amongst rows and rows of children,
talking and giggling waiting for the show to begin.

After 20 years, I get to experience the same thing over again,
but with swapped roles, as a teacher instead.
Wow. 20 years, 2 decades.
Just two short words, it encapsulates our entire life journey till date.
Look at how much we've grown. Amazing isn't it?

At first, narrow-minded me saw this opportunity as a chore.
Then I realised it actually resonates with my new year resolution!
Wow, what a coincidence.
I wish to develop leadership qualities and here it is, to test me.
To test me how much I want this goal.

Compliments were received.. Hehe.
But still I feel there are many AFIs, many shortcomings!
Through this, I have learnt a lot but there's so much more.

p.s. 我要做一个永远填不满的杯子。

a Blissful Boy named Zirui.

Before Zirui's birthday celebration,
went to pay respects to my Gong Gong and also to
拜个早年.
Actually looked forward to this day :)
Granny woke at 530am just to cook up a spread of dishes for him..
While waiting, she told us about some stories from the WWII
and i thought it was rather interesting leh!

小坡 = Bugis

大坡 = Chinatown

My granny and grannypappy will always go for movies at night
on the last week of every month!
So sweet right :P

When we were paying respects to Gong Gong,

she actually asked me to pray for a paktor partner - _ -
Wahaha why is everyone asking me about that!
At this age, I think it's just natural for people to ask lol.
还是顺其自然吧 :)

Really wish for her to be healthy and happy everyday.

The rain didn't dampen our spirits at all.
What a wonderful time playing
Bang, Giza and Murderer at Zirui's birthday chalet!

Thanks Angie & Maxie for lugging the games
all the way from West to East ah..

Ultimate thanks to Zirui & family
for inviting us over for this celebration man!

当我们同在一起真快乐无比。
:)
